Job Description

Salary: $217,520 - 415,760 per year Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science, statistics, economics, finance, actuarial sciences, science and engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • 10 years of progressive experience in predictive analytics or data analysis, including 6 years focused on training and validating statistical, physical, machine learning, and other advanced analytics models.
  • 6 years of experience in one or more dynamic scripted languages (such as Python, R, etc.) with an emphasis on creating clear, well-documented code that is easy to follow and has appropriate comments.
  • Expertise in classical supervised modeling techniques for prediction, including linear/logistic models, discriminant analysis, support vector machines, decision trees, and forest models.
  • Expertise in unsupervised modeling techniques such as k-means clustering, hierarchical/agglomerative clustering, neighbors algorithms, and DBSCAN.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in developing, deploying, and managing advanced analytics solutions.
  • A proven track record of delivering innovative solutions that enhance business adoption and add value.
  • Significant project management experience, with the ability to anticipate and effectively manage project milestones, risks, and challenges.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate and escalate potential challenges and limitations to leadership.
  • Experience in mentoring junior technical staff during business interactions and model development.
  • Capability to articulate and influence complex technology decisions to diverse audiences across the organization, including both technical and non-technical teams.
  • Proven experience leading business or product/portfolio transformations utilizing advanced analytics.
Responsibilities:
  • I will identify, research, and define significant AI/ML use cases in collaboration with business leaders, executive peers, and strategic partners.
  • I will guide comprehensive efforts to develop scalable, efficient, and highly-performing automated AI/ML solutions.
  • I will apply deep expertise to enhance the influence of modeling techniques on emerging business initiatives.
  • I will collaborate with IT architects to design, implement, monitor, and scale innovative AI/ML solutions that convert prototypes into new products, services, and features.
  • I will ensure that AI/ML solutions are constructed following industry best practices and robust methodologies.
  • I will work with model risk partners to foster a culture of regulatory compliance.
  • I will design extensive, complex information assets that facilitate applied analytics.
  • I will join forces with engineering, data, and information architects to establish and maintain well-governed, documented, and controlled datasets from varied internal and external sources.
  • I will seek out opportunities to simplify, modernize, and standardize the model development lifecycle.
  • I will provide expert technical guidance by vetting vendor acquisitions.
  • I will elevate talent and recruitment efforts by leading or engaging in communities of practice, talent development initiatives, and technical interview panels.
  • I will effectively communicate intricate analytical and technical concepts to diverse audiences, enhancing organizational data literacy and guiding business priorities.
  • I will offer technical oversight for the establishment and upkeep of a robust library of reusable, production-quality algorithms and supporting code.
  • I will cultivate and maintain academic and industry relationships for research purposes.
  • I will represent USAA at key internal and external technology and advanced analytics conferences.
  • I will ensure that risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in line with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

In this role as a Data Scientist Principal, I seek a candidate who will utilize technical expertise and industry experience to significantly impact the implementation, scalability, and enablement of artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) at USAA. This position requires an individual to work in the office four days a week and can be based in several locations including San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Charlotte, NC, Chesapeake, VA, or Tampa, FL. We offer relocation assistance for this position.

We provide a competitive salary range of $217,520 - $415,760, adjusting based on market data and the candidate's experience. You may also be eligible for performance-based pay incentives at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
