The Department of Marine Resources (DMR), Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture Inspection Division, is seeking applicants with strong scientific skills to fill an Aquaculture Inspector (Marine Resource Scientist I) position located at the West Boothbay Harbor Headquarters.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position involves investigative and protective services work focused on aquaculture operations, seafood safety, and public health. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Senior Aquaculture Inspector, assisting with routine aquaculture inspections and compliance activities across the state. Within the Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture, this role will support field inspections, evaluate findings, and report any deficiencies or non-conformances with state and federal regulations. The position will also assist with developing program policies, procedures, data collection, and reports that strengthen and support Maine's growing aquaculture industry.

This position has a significant field component and travel throughout the Maine coast from spring to fall. Remote work is possible, with supervisory approval.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES PREFERRED: The successful candidate will have knowledge of the aquaculture industry as well as the following:
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Knowledge of biology, basic statistics, aquaculture methods and technologies as it applies to seeding, grow-out, harvest, lease management, and compliance to the National Shellfish Sanitation Program.
  • Ability to identify and document infractions of laws, rules, and/or regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively. This includes the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with industry members.
  • Strong technical writing, database management, and GIS mapping skills.
  • Ability to operate and trailer small boats across Maine.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Entry level education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, or engineering discipline with demonstrated experience in the field of marine resource research and management or another related field.

Preference will go to candidates with experience with small boat handling, marine navigation, and GIS skillsets.
